DEBATE: "BUENOS PROFESORES VERSUS PROFESORES BIEN VALORADOS. EL TRIBUNAL DE LAS ENCUESTAS EN LA UNIVERSIDAD"

Teaching quality is often associated exclusively with student opinion as shown in surveys, which means that lecturers are good if, and only if, they are well-rated by the students. But that is quite simply the opinion of the students, just one of the great many parameters to be taken into consideration when it comes to evaluating a lecturer’s teaching work. We measure what is easy to measure, while tending to ignore important aspects that cannot be measured. In such surveys, what is often paramount is a lecturer’s interpersonal and communication skills, and nothing more. Lecturer evaluation is a complex business, and simplifying it by looking at skindeep aspects – due to lack of alternatives, out of demagogy, ignorance, vested interests, etc. – is tantamount to denaturing it dangerously.La calidad de la docencia se asocia a menudo, exclusivamente, con la opinión del estudiante manifestada en las encuestas, de manera que un profesor es bueno si y sólo si es bien valorado por los estudiantes. Pero ello se trataría, simplemente, de la opinión de los estudiantes, uno de los múltiples parámetros a considerar a la hora de evaluar la labor docente del profesor. Lo que sucede es que medimos aquello fácilmente medible, pero tendemos a ignorar aquello importante que no se puede medir. Y muchas veces, en tales encuestas, lo que prima es la habilidad del profesor para relacionarse y comunicar, pero nada más. La evaluación del profesor es compleja y simplificarla moviéndonos por cotas epidérmicas - por carecer de alternativa, por demagogia, por ignorancia, por interés, etc. - equivale a desnaturalizarla peligrosamente
